All Fun & Games: Matthew Kaney

September 20, 2013 - November 2, 2013

PLUG Projects’ newest exhibition, “All Fun and Games” introduces Kansas City to the work of Oklahoma-based artist Matthew Kaney. Working with electronic, computer, and web technologies, he creates works that explore aspects of contemporary culture through interaction, metaphor, and humor. In Kaney’s solo exhibition at PLUG Projects he will be presenting a series of video games based on some of today’s most prominent political issues. The games invite the viewer to play through processes in which all citizens in contemporary capitalism participate directly or indirectly – the management of wealth, manufacturing, surveillance, and so on—the types of frequently invisible processes that surround us. In all cases, these games do not pretend to offer answers. Rather, they offer new ways to frame the question, an opportunity to take an idea and play through its implications.

Matthew Kaney states, “Interactivity constitutes a major component of my work. I am fascinated by the ways in which interactive technologies, especially video games, can compel users to perform meaningful actions. “American Arcade,” my series of arcade games designed for the gallery, relied on the allure of 1980s arcade games to entice viewers to assemble televisions in a Chinese electronics factory, pilot an unmanned drone, and rig the capitalist system in favor of the rich. Although these are not not issues that a viewer might feel comfortable discussing, or roles the viewer might ethically support, the game form incentivises these problematic actions, hopefully opening their performance to satirical critique.”

Matthew Kaney is an artist living in Norman, Oklahoma. He received his BFA from University of Oklahoma in 2013. This past spring he received one of three Spotlight Artist commissions to develop a set of three politically informed arcade games for the Momentum OKC exhibition. Kaney has also been a recipient of the Norman Arts Council Award (2013), Momentum 2012 Award of Merit, Clyde D. Clack Memorial Scholarship (2011), and the Weitzenhoffer Family College of Fine Arts Graduation Print Commission (2011).
