Lifted: Joey Watson

March 16, 2016 - May 21, 2016

PLUG Projects presents Lifted, a solo exhibition by Joey Watson, in conjunction with the 2016 NCECA Conference.

Watson’s work is oriented around the concept of ceremonial procedure and its associated paraphernalia. His interest lies in the forces that ritual objects imply and the sequence of operations necessary to activate them. The work he makes is intended to be utilitarian, but within specialized circumstances. Through this intention he invites percipients into choreographed scenarios that entice a kind of transformative participation. He chooses clay as a medium because it will outlive our current civilization by millennia; in time his objects will be all that’s left suggesting his existence, a fossilization of his spirit. On the other hand, to work with this material is to harness a kind of ancestral lineage that humankind shares with clay as one of our earliest, most fundamental technologies.

Joey Watson was born and raised in the Sonoran Desert and was charmed by the visual splendor of his environment. Canyons carved through time by erosion, mountains in every direction jutting out of the earth, mineral deposits and the unique plant and animal life have all been influential to him and to his work. Upon graduating in 2014 from the Kansas City Art Institute with a BFA in ceramics, Watson was awarded a studio residency through the Charlotte Street Foundation for the 2014 -2015 term. Currently he is the artist in residence at the Kansas City Clay Guild until the Fall of 2016. joeywatsonspecialartcrafts.cool
